Investing in the Leaders Who Shape Our Youth

At PYSC, we believe that great coaches build great communities. That’s why we’re deeply committed to developing and supporting coaches across Philadelphia—equipping them with the tools, training, and mentorship they need to positively impact young lives. Coaches are often mentors, role models, and trusted adults in a child’s life. When they’re well-trained and supported, they can create safe, inclusive, and empowering environments where youth not only learn the game—but also build confidence, resilience, and life skills that extend far beyond the field. Investing in coaches means investing in the future of our city’s youth, and PYSC is proud to lead that charge.

Coach Development Program

PYSC is proud to lead a citywide movement to professionalize and support youth sports coaching in Philadelphia. In partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Coach Across America(formerly Up2Us Sports), we launched a pilot program in 2023 designed to train and empower a new generation of local coaches.

Our goal is simple but powerful: to build a skilled, community-rooted coaching workforce that can lead high-quality, accessible youth sports programs in Philly’s public play spaces. Coaches in the program—many of whom live in or come from the neighborhoods they serve—are selected to complete a year of AmeriCorps service while receiving intensive training in trauma-informed practices, child safety, technical skills, and sports-based youth development.

In just two years, the program has grown from 10 to 20 coaches, reaching over 400 young people across seven rec centers through baseball, basketball, flag football, dance, and soccer. In 2025, the program was renewed for a third year, with 12 new fellows set to serve double the hours of previous cohorts.

Each coach is paired with an experienced mentor and receives classroom, online, and on-the-field instruction. Coaches are compensated for their service through Coach Across America and receive a living stipend and education award upon successful completion of their term. PYSC also covers key program costs—like equipment, apparel, and referee fees—so coaches can focus on what matters most: making a difference.

Because when we invest in coaches, we’re investing in safe, empowering spaces for kids to grow—on and off the field.
